There are many products sold today that appear to be genuine
leather but are not. They often use the term “vegan leather” to make the bags seem earth friendly and sustainable. That simply isn’t true. Genuine leather can be earth friendly and many tanners have changed to vegetable based tannins. However, that leather will never be referred to as “vegan leather”.
Here are some ways to distinguish the real from the fake.
- SMELL – Genuine leather has a distinctive earthy smell. The
tannins can give the skin a rich woodsy smell. Fake leather usually has no smell. - FEEL – Genuine leather feels like skin. Rub your fingers across the garment or bag to determine the feel. Some fake leather feels similar, but not
like the real thing. - DURABILITY – Genuine leather is tough, sturdy and durable. Leather bags won’t usually rip or tear, and will not burn. Fake leather is likely to rip, tear and burn.
- NAME – Genuine leather will be named either genuine leather,
or named as the type of leather; for example, cowhide, dollar leather, or crazy horse. Fake leather is usually called PU (Polyurethane) leather or vegan leather. - PRICE – Genuine leather tends to cost more because of its
quality and durability. One quality leather bag can last a lifetime. Inexpensive fake leather bags usually last one season.
